During COVID, internet access has proven to be desperately needed and a problem for the Deaf community.

DHCC has formed a partnership with Catholic Social Services, Germantown Deaf Ministries, local fire stations and The PA School for the Deaf to bring internet access via a traveling hot spot to people who either never had access or have lost it since they used a public facility like libraries.

The hot spot consists of five 12.9” Ipads set up on tables with chairs, with a canopy for inclement weather. The stations can be used for videophone calls, or any other web business.

Interested in having our hotspot at your location? Email Ken Wesler, kwesler@dhcc.org

DHCC offers on-site Training & Workshops that cover a variety of sensitivity topics and CEUs related to open and equal communication among Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing individuals. DHCC will work with your schedule to make the trainings available to your staff. Our standard presentation is 2 hours; however DHCC can adapt to meet your needs. Our goal is to educate (not to create a scheduling headache) so you can provide better services to your Deaf and hard of hearing customers, patients, and coworkers. In addition, our trainings are frequently used to meet an organization’s continuing education requirements for their employees.

Who can benefit from this?

Businesses, social service agencies, government departments, educational institutions, hospitals, and organizations of all types will find these trainings beneficial. Those who may benefit the most include organizations that have Deaf or hard of hearing employees, or those who provide services to Deaf or hard of hearing consumers.

Knowledgeable DHCC presenters with first-hand experience will cover topics such as:

  • Laws relevant to communication access for individuals with a hearing loss
  • Common challenges, impacts, and characteristics of hearing loss
  • Linguistic and cultural diversity among Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing populations
  • Strategies for effective communication
  • How and when to request access services such as a sign language interpreter, real-time captioning services (CART) and/or other devices, and how to use them effectively
  • Information on additional DHCC services, such as sign language interpreters and CART, that assist organizations with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance

What is The Community Support Fund?

In the spring of 2021, The Board of Directors of The Deaf-Hearing Communication Centre created The Community Support Fund in order to ensure that the community that DHCC serves has access to as many DHCC resources as possible.  These resources include the classrooms and meeting rooms with the DHCC offices in Swarthmore, as well as programs and services from interpreting to sensitivity training.

For example, the rent for a classroom at DHCC is $75 an hour.  A community group might need the room for a day, and be unable to afford the $600 rent.  That group can apply for support from the Community Support Fund to underwrite the rent.

The application is just a few questions and if support is granted the nonprofit group will be a discounted rate, or even receive the use of the space for free!  In another example, a nonprofit group might want sensitivity training so they may successfully interface with the Deaf, hard of hearing or DeafBlind communities.  They may apply to the Community Support Fund so there is no cost to them for that service.
